Thinking of a weekend in Stellenbosch or Franschoek? Fuggetaboutit!

Give the wine-landy farmy village of Philadelphia a go. Sitting on the edge of the Swartland up the N7 between Cape Town and Malmesbury (or Durbanville and Melkbos- depending on your orientation) this happy hamlet wears its newly acquired coat of discreet poshness over its undergarment of plaasdorp authenticity.

Do as little or as much as you want - go wine tasting at one of the nearby wine farms, go for a lesson in pottery, learn how to weave, eat a traditional "boere" Sunday lunch at the Malle Meul or something lighter at the shady Peppertree.

The Stone Roof House is a rustic 3 bedroom set behind an olive grove at the bottom of the village with views towards the Perdeberg and the wheat fields.

Layout and floor area:
Downstairs: open verandah, lounge/dining area, open plan kitchen, bathroom with shower, main bedroom with bath (the downstairs bathroom lies just outside the main bedroom and is effectively an en-suite bathroom whilst acting as a guest bathroom during the day). The floors and walls are done in a white cement finish and the ceiling is large rafters and pine timber about 3 metres from floor level. Oversized doors allow cooling air through in summer and for the cold months there is a large closed combustion fireplace: stack it with logs and this will generate furnace like heat and burn a fraction of the fuel that an open fireplace consumes. Use the top for slow simmering stews.

The kitchen has a built in gas hob, electric oven, dishwasher and washing machine. And of course is fully equipped from pasta makers to teaspoons.

Upstairs: 2 well sized bedrooms, a large office area and a bathroom consisting of toilet, wash basin and bath with shower over it. Walk out of large hinged doors to the big wooden deck. Now this is what the country is all about: long views over the wheat fields to the mountains beyond, plenty of space to sit and braai, enjoy morning coffee or evening wine. The deck is fully covered and offers protection from sun, rain and wind. Wooden floors throughout on the first floor and vast headroom under the heavy arched roof above.

Life in Philadelphia:

You just can't beat it. Far enough away from everything to get away from city stress and suburban drudgery yet close enough to have all the choices, services and attractions that Cape Town has on offer. In the village there's plenty going on: 100m away is the Pepper Tree Art Stable: good coffee and a restaurant act as a hub for an art gallery, potter; a shop selling hand made leatherware, woven and knitted items and locally made delicacies. It gets busy on a weekend but living on its doorstep makes it hard to resist taking a walk there during the week for a morning coffee and breakfast or a piece of essential cheesecake.

De Malle Meul is the old village grain mill open on Sundays for a huge Sunday Boerekos buffet and on a daily basis as a gallery where Pieter van der Westhuizen's paintings and prints can be looked at and purchased. Van der Westhuizen lived and worked in his house tucked off the Philadelphia village square for many years. Coffee, delicious melktert and hot soup with plaasbrood (homemade bread) are available from Tuesday to Sunday. Its closed on Mondays. It is also quite an experience to go there when they have a “soup, sherry and show evening”- dinner, drinks and music, comedy or a live band.

The local potter does lessons in pottery on Saturdays as well as painting / glazing ceramics.

Farm land surrounds the village which means there is plenty of space for mountain biking, walking, running and horse riding.

Other stuff: Wine estates- there are 2 cellars in the Philadelphia region: Capaia and Havana Hills. Both will do a cellar tour and a wine tasting but these are by appointment and they are not open on weekends. The Durbanvill estates are mostly within 20kms away: closest is Diemersdal but Hillcrest, Nitida, Meerendal, Bloemendal, D'aria. Durbanville Hills and Altydgedacht are all great producers and many are open on weekends. Splash out on our custom built Philadelphia and Durbanville wine route tour: frees you up to taste all the wine you want to and you won't get lost. Camphill Village Market: biodynamic farm products including meat, cheese, the creamiesT milk on the planet, jams, bread, rusks, herbs and hand crafted goods are all to be got. The Village Cafe serves up ace salads, burgers and cakes depending on their mood. First Saturday (or is it Sunday) of every month. About 20km away going up ther N7 and left onto Klein Dassenberg Rd.

The house has a monitored alarm system linked to a 24hr monitoring company in Durbanville.
